Choosing a fireplace for a Wellington home
Wellington’s climate makes a good fireplace more than a luxury. The combination of cold southerlies, damp winters, and older housing stock means heating performance really matters. Most Wellington homes are heritage villas or bungalows with existing chimneys, which opens up options like inbuilt wood fires and gas inserts that aren’t practical in newer builds.
Wellington City Council requires a building consent for any solid fuel heater installation. The permit process typically takes up to 25 working days, which is worth factoring into your winter timeline. Kapiti Woodfires manages the entire consent process on your behalf, including floor plans if needed.
For homes in clean air zones, which covers most of urban Wellington, you’ll need a clean-air approved fire. All wood fires we supply meet the Wellington Regional Council’s clean air requirements.
Gas fires are increasingly popular in Wellington’s inner suburbs where chimney access is limited, offering instant heat with no consent requirement in most cases.

Between technical specifications, performance and safety requirements, the selection process can be quite daunting and confusing. The location of your fire as well as room configuration are important factors.
I already have a wood burner but I want to replace it. Do I need a council permit?
Yes, you do.
Can you organise the council permit on our behalf?
Yes, we certainly can. You will need to provide documentation for the application – proof of ownership (rates bill or title deed) and a current floor plan showing all levels, rooms labelled, doors, windows, smoke alarms and where the fire is located.
If producing a floor plan is a task you’d rather not worry about, we’ve got you covered with our in-house floor plan service.
I have already purchased my fire, will you provide an installation service only?
Yes, we are happy to provide a quote for an installation only service.
Please note: Any woodfire installation is subject to council requirements, including obtaining the appropriate permit. We can do this on your behalf.
How long will I have to wait for my installation to be done?
The rule of thumb is that the council permit must be issued first before the installation can be done.
The councils ask that we allow them up to 25 working days, particularly in autumn and winter.
At certain times of the year, this process can (but not guaranteed) be shorter. We will give an estimated date of installation upon supplying your quote.
This will be based on our workload and the council process, and once your quote is accepted and everything is underway, we will keep you up to date on the progress of your job.
