Best Outdoor Fireplaces for Kāpiti Coast Beachfront Properties

Living near the Kāpiti Coast makes outdoor living hard to beat, but it also makes choosing an outdoor fireplace slightly more complicated.

Salt carried through the air can accelerate corrosion on exposed metal, while wind affects smoke, ash and how much warmth actually reaches the people sitting around the fire. An outdoor fireplace also spends far more time exposed to the weather than it does burning.

That means the best outdoor fireplace for a coastal home is not necessarily the biggest or most powerful model. We also want to look at the materials used, weather protection, whether the firebox is open or enclosed, how the fireplace will be installed and how much maintenance it is likely to need.

For coastal Kāpiti properties, these are some of the outdoor fireplaces we believe are particularly worth comparing.

Jetmaster Alfresco 850: Best for a High-Exposure Coastal Site

Jet Master Alfresco outdoor fireplace

The Jetmaster Alfresco 850 deserves particular attention for a property close to the Kāpiti coastline because Jetmaster specifically allows a stainless-steel firebox to be arranged for coastal sites. That is an important distinction.

The standard Alfresco uses a double-skin steel firebox and is designed to provide both radiant and convected heat. It is an open-fronted fireplace, giving you the traditional open-fire experience, and BBQ grilling equipment is available for cooking over the fire.

For a coastal installation, however, the ability to specify the firebox in stainless steel is what makes it especially interesting. A stainless-steel weather shield is also available to protect the fireplace when it is not being used.

We would still want to discuss exactly how exposed the property is. Stainless steel is not a single material specification, and different grades provide different levels of resistance to salt contamination. Corrosion-resistant stainless grades are generally needed as marine exposure becomes more severe.

The Alfresco remains an open-fronted fire, so it does not provide the same smoke and ash containment as an enclosed fireplace. Correct positioning and flue design therefore still matter, particularly on beachfront and highly exposed sections.

Best suited to: Coastal homeowners who want a traditional built-in outdoor fireplace and want to investigate a firebox specifically configured for the marine environment.

Metro Outdoor 850: Best for Controlling Smoke and Wind-Blown Ash

If smoke and wind-blown ash are high on your list of concerns, the Metro Outdoor 850 approaches outdoor heating differently from most of the other fireplaces in this comparison. Instead of a completely open firebox, it has a large panoramic glass door.

That helps contain the fire and significantly reduces the problem of wind carrying ash and smoke directly into the entertaining area. For a breezy Kāpiti backyard, particularly where neighbours or outdoor dining areas are relatively close, that extra control can be a major advantage. Metro also includes an internal cooking grill and pizza stone.

The Outdoor 850 uses a Corten steel firebox and, depending on the configuration, a Corten pedestal with a stainless-steel flue system and stainless fastenings. Metro says these materials have been selected to provide outdoor durability and corrosion resistance. Models are also available with roof-penetration flue kits for appropriately designed covered outdoor areas.

There is one coastal qualification worth understanding.

Corten is weathering steel. It develops a protective oxide layer when conditions allow the steel to go through appropriate wet and dry cycles. In locations with heavy airborne sea salt, chloride contamination can interfere with that process. New Zealand weathering-steel guidance therefore recommends considering both the wider coastal environment and the particular microclimate around the steel.

That does not make the Metro a poor outdoor fireplace. It means we would look more closely at the property if it sits directly beside the sea rather than assuming any outdoor steel is maintenance-free.

If outdoor cooking is a bigger priority, Metro also makes the Outdoor 1200 Braai. It uses a large Corten steel firebox with stainless-steel flue components and is a good alternative for larger entertaining areas where BBQ cooking and flexibility matter more than the enclosed-firebox smoke and ash control of the Outdoor 850.

Best suited to: Homeowners who put smoke containment, wind-blown ash control and an enclosed fire experience ahead of having a completely open fireplace.

Masport Matakana 1200: Best All-Rounder for Fire, Pizza and BBQ Cooking

The Masport Matakana 1200 makes sense when an outdoor fire is intended to become the centre of a larger entertaining area.

It combines a 1.2-metre-wide open fireplace with a cast-iron hot plate and grill plus a substantial built-in pizza oven. Masport’s current specifications describe 4 to 5 mm steel construction alongside 3 mm stainless steel components, and the fireplace comes with a stainless-steel weather shield for protection when the fire is not operating.

That weather shield is particularly useful on a coastal property because protecting the fire when it is sitting unused matters almost as much as what happens while it is burning.

The Matakana also has a removable spark-guard door. That is useful for containing sparks and embers, although it should not be confused with the fully enclosed glass firebox of the Metro Outdoor 850. The Matakana is still fundamentally an open wood fire.

It can be incorporated into masonry or installed using the appropriate Zero Clearance system, giving homeowners considerable flexibility when designing a sheltered outdoor room around it.

Best suited to: Families who want a substantial built-in fireplace, BBQ and pizza oven in one outdoor centrepiece.

Escea EK Series: Best for a Designed Coastal Outdoor Kitchen

For a contemporary home where the outdoor fireplace is being planned at the same time as the landscaping, cabinetry or outdoor kitchen, the Escea EK Outdoor Fireplace Kitchen is one of the most architectural options in the range.

The current EK1250 uses a double layer of 4 mm steel, air-cooled fluted stainless-steel back plates and a 25 mm firebrick-lined base. Escea has designed the fireplace to tolerate outdoor exposure while also protecting the firebox from the considerable heat generated during use.

Cooking is a major part of the design rather than an afterthought. The EK system offers adjustable-height grills, cooking bays, an ember generator and an optional pizza oven. When cooking is finished, the cooking equipment can be stored away and the unit becomes a large open fireplace.

For a coastal property, its biggest advantage may be the ability to design the complete area around the fire. Shelter, orientation, masonry, seating and exposure can all be considered as one project.

It is still an open fire and the main firebox is not described as stainless steel, so we would not put it ahead of the Jetmaster solely on corrosion resistance. It makes this shortlist because of its robust construction and the amount of control it gives us over the surrounding outdoor design.

Best suited to: Modern coastal homes where the fireplace, outdoor kitchen and entertaining area are being designed as one integrated space.

Warmington Nouveau Pizzeria 900: Best for Serious Outdoor Cooking

The Warmington Nouveau Pizzeria 900 is another particularly interesting option where cooking is just as important as heating.

It combines an open wood fire with a BBQ hotplate and grill and an integrated refractory-brick pizza oven.

For this article, the important specification is the choice of firebox construction. Warmington’s Pizzeria 900 can be supplied in painted boiler-grade steel or painted stainless steel, and the package commonly includes a stainless-steel weather shield.

That stainless option makes it worthy of discussion for a coastal property, although we would still confirm the exact material specification and proposed exposure before deciding on a configuration.

There is also an important location consideration. The current Pizzeria 900 listed by Kapiti Woodfires is a rural model rather than a clean-air-approved model, so its suitability needs to be checked for the particular property rather than assuming it can be installed anywhere along the Kāpiti Coast.

Best suited to: Rural or otherwise suitable coastal properties where wood-fired cooking, BBQs and pizza are the major priorities.

What Makes a Good Outdoor Fireplace Near the Coast?

Salt is the main difference between choosing an outdoor fire for a typical suburban backyard and selecting one for a highly exposed coastal property.

Windborne sea salt deposits chlorides onto metal surfaces and speeds up corrosion. New Zealand’s combination of moisture, long coastline and salt-laden air makes corrosion an especially important design consideration here.

Interestingly, simply putting a fireplace under shelter does not eliminate the problem. Surfaces protected from rain can sometimes accumulate more salt because they are not naturally washed clean.

This is why we look at the whole installation rather than only the material named on a brochure. The firebox, flue, fasteners, fascia, cooking equipment and weather cover can all use different metals and finishes.

Stainless Steel Is Useful, but the Grade Still Matters

“Stainless steel” by itself does not guarantee that something will remain completely unaffected by the sea.

Different stainless grades provide different levels of corrosion resistance. We therefore would not choose an outdoor fireplace purely because the word “stainless” appears somewhere in the specifications.

For a beachfront property, it is worth asking which components are stainless, what grade or finish has been specified and what maintenance the manufacturer recommends.

Open Fire or Enclosed Fire?

This is another area where coastal conditions can change the decision.

An open fireplace gives you direct flame, easy cooking access and the atmosphere many people want outdoors. The Jetmaster, Matakana, Escea EK and Warmington Pizzeria all use that basic approach.

The trade-off is that an open fire is more exposed to changing airflow.

The Metro Outdoor 850 is different because the glass door encloses the fire. That makes it particularly interesting where controlling wind-blown ash and smoke is more important than having completely unobstructed access to the flames.

Weather Protection and Maintenance Matter

No outdoor fireplace becomes maintenance-free simply because it was designed for outside.

Where the manufacturer supplies a weather shield or cover, it makes sense to use it as directed. Salt deposits should also be cleaned from exposed surfaces rather than being left to build up indefinitely.

We recommend regular cleaning and inspection of exposed steel in marine environments, though individual fireplace manufacturers have their own maintenance requirements.

Which Outdoor Fireplace Would We Choose for a Coastal Kāpiti Home?

There is no single winner because “coastal” can mean very different things.

A home several streets back from the beach in a reasonably protected part of Waikanae may present quite different conditions from a property directly facing the sea at Raumati or Paekākāriki.

The important thing is to tell us how close your property is to the sea and how exposed the proposed location will be. We can then compare the fireplace itself, the materials, flue, surrounding construction and weather protection rather than recommending a model from the specifications alone.
