STÜV 30 Woodburner for Wellington Homes

If you live in Kelburn, Te Aro, Mount Victoria, or Brooklyn, the STÜV 30 is probably on your radar. It is one of the few woodburners that suits a modern Wellington homes. It’s slim enough for a compact lounge and clean enough to pass council rules. It also looks good enough to be the centre piece of the room.

Kapiti Woodfires supplies and installs the full STÜV range across Wellington City, Porirua, and the Hutt Valley. Here is what you need to know before you buy.

What Is the STÜV 30 Woodburner?

The STÜV 30 is a Belgian-designed freestanding Woodburner built around a rotating drum. The rotating drum gives you up to 360 degrees of positioning so you can direct the heat and flame view wherever suits the room.

On the Rural models, that works alongside a three-door system, open-door, glass-door, and closed-door so you control both the direction and how you experience the fire. The Clean Air version runs closed-door only, which is what keeps it within Wellington’s urban air quality rules.

It’s also tall and narrow. At 465mm wide and under half a metre deep, it fits into spaces where a standard wide woodburner simply will not. That matters in older Wellington villas and townhouses where floor space is tight and every square metre counts.

It runs exceptionally clean with an emissions rating of 0.3 g/kg sitting well below the NZ national standard of 1.5 g/kg. For Wellington’s urban suburbs where clean air rules apply, that number matters when it comes to getting your building consent through.

STÜV 30 Clean Air or Rural: Which Version Do You Need

Wellington City, Porirua, and the Hutt Valley all sit within clean air zones monitored by Greater Wellington Regional Council. If your section is under two hectares, which covers nearly every urban property in Wellington, you need a clean-air approved burner.

Greater Wellington Regional Council sets and monitors the clean air rules for the Wellington region. You can check the air quality rules for your area on their website.

STÜV 30 Compact Woodburner (Clean Air)

This is the one for most Wellington homes. It runs as a closed-door, fixed air-control fire. That configuration is what keeps it within clean air rules. It burns hot and clean through the glass door. It can also connect directly to outside air, which suits well-insulated or passive-style builds.

STÜV 30 Compact Woodburner (Rural)

This version adds open-door, glass-door, and closed-door operation. Because open-front fires are restricted in urban clean air zones, this model is for lifestyle properties of two hectares or more. It cannot legally go on a standard urban section.

Will a 7 kW Fire Heat Your Wellington Home?

This is where it gets real. The Compact models are rated for well-insulated spaces up to 100 square metres. That covers most two to three-bedroom homes on paper. But Wellington’s housing stock tells a different story.

A Kelburn villa with 3.5 metre ceilings and single-skin walls is a very different heating challenge from a new Te Aro apartment with underfloor insulation and double glazing. Both might be 90 square metres.

Only one of them will be genuinely comfortable with a 7 kW fire.

That is why we do a site visit before recommending any model. We look at ceiling height, insulation, draught exposure, and how the living space actually flows. Wellington’s southerlies and exposed sections mean the numbers on a spec sheet do not always match what you feel in the room.

If your home is larger than 100m² or older and poorly insulated, take a look at the rest of our wood fires range. We will point you in the right direction.

Building Consent process for Wellington Woodburner’s

Every new or replacement solid fuel heater in the Wellington region needs a building consent before installation can start. Wellington City Council allows up to 25 working days to process applications. If you are planning ahead for winter, apply early. A consent lodged in August rarely gets a fire installed before it gets cold.

Kapiti Woodfires manages the full consent process on your behalf. That covers the application, floor plan documentation if required, and compliance sign-off. If you do not have a current floor plan, we have an in-house service that takes care of it.

Our installers are registered members of the New Zealand Home Heating Association, the industry body that sets the standard for safe and compliant fireplace installation across New Zealand.

Once consent is issued, the physical installation is typically one to two days on site. That covers the hearth, the flue system, and the roof flashing. We walk you through the fire before we leave.

Is the STÜV 30 Right for Your Wellington Home?

It is a good fit if you want a fire that reads as a design feature, not just a heat source. If you live in an urban Wellington suburb and need a clean-air approved model. If you are in a modern or recently renovated home up to 100m² and do not need wetback plumbing.

It is not the right pick if you need wetback functionality, have a large older home with high ceilings and poor insulation, or are on a lifestyle block of two hectares or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a building consent for a woodburner in Wellington?

Yes. Every new or replacement solid fuel heater requires consent before any work begins. Kapiti Woodfires handles the full application on your behalf.

Does the STÜV 30 work with a wetback?

No. Neither the Clean Air nor Rural Compact models are compatible with wetback plumbing.

How long does installation take?

Council consent can take up to 25 working days. Once issued, the physical installation is typically one to two days on site.

What firewood should I use?

Dry, seasoned hardwood below 20 per cent moisture content. Damp wood reduces efficiency, builds up creosote in the flue, and dirties the glass faster.

How often does the flue need sweeping?

At least once a year before winter. We offer a chimney sweep service across Wellington and the wider region.

Do you install in my suburb?

Yes. We cover Kelburn, Te Aro, Mount Victoria, Brooklyn, Karori, Thorndon, Khandallah, Porirua, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, and the Kapiti Coast.
